CurveBeam Announces First pedCAT Installation in Australia

Warrington, Penn. – Feb. 14, 2014 – CurveBeam announced that Dr Gerard Bourke’s Bayside Orthopedics in Melbourne is the first practice in Australia to acquire the pedCAT, the first true weight-bearing Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) scanner dedicated to the foot and ankle.

“The pedCAT was introduced as a global product, to provide a revolutionary tool to enhance Foot & Ankle diagnosis and treatment worldwide,” said CurveBeam President & CEO Arun Singh. “Crossing the equator for the first time to deploy a unit in Melbourne, Australia firmly validates the above vision.”

The pedCAT system can image one or both feet in true weight bearing position and creates a full three dimensional volume of the bony anatomy in less than three minutes. The pedCAT is a compact, low dose device with scan times under a minute, making it ideal for an orthopedic clinic workflow.

Dr. Gerard Bourke, an orthopedic surgeon, will be utilizing the pedCAT to improve his patient care. Dr. Bourke said the pedCAT has enabled him to have total control over his diagnostic imaging procedures, providing comprehensive information content in a quick time frame.

“I have been performing total ankle joint replacements and 1st MTP (great toe) joint replacements for many years and the ability to scan in the weight bearing position provides functional information, especially when dealing with difficult conditions such as bony and soft tissue impingement,” Dr. Bourke said. “I plan to perform research in the future in order to improve the diagnosis and treatment of both conditions.”

“I believe the pedCAT CT will revolutionize the imaging of foot and ankle conditions and I am certain it will become the standard of care for foot and ankle surgeons in the future, especially when diagnosing complex deformities and pain associated with prostheses,” Dr. Bourke said.

The pedCAT was approved for sale in Australia by the Australian Department of Health’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in October 2013.

CurveBeam has entered into an exclusive partnership with Australian Imaging, a specialist imaging company focusing on medical and dental imaging. Australian Imaging offers turnkey solutions and applications support for advanced diagnostic needs.

“We are extremely excited about the partnership with CurveBeam and the possibilities the PedCAT will provide for users in Australia and New Zealand,” said Sharmaine Crooks, manager at Australian Imaging. “The pedCAT is truly groundbreaking and already the excitement is generating in many specialties with interest on foot and ankle imaging: orthopaedic surgery, sports medicine, radiology and podiatry. The ability to diagnose in their own practice, in one sitting, will streamline workflow and allow the patient to see and discuss the treatment processes immediately. What an amazing benefit!”
